...drumroll...

... Mystic City by Theo Lawrence!

My review of the book was supposed to go up on Monday, but I'm still not happy with it and I'm way to exhausted to attempt to edit it! But look out for a full review here soon because I have to say- I loved this book! It's got the full package- magic and mystique, a wonderful Romeo and Juliet style love story, a thrilling storyline, danger, and a mystery to unravel.

For fans of Matched, The Hunger Games, X-Men, and Blade Runner comes a tale of a magical city divided, a political rebellion ignited, and a love that was meant to last forever. Book One of the Mystic City Novels.

Aria Rose, youngest scion of one of Mystic City's two ruling rival families, finds herself betrothed to Thomas Foster, the son of her parents' sworn enemies. The union of the two will end the generations-long political feud—and unite all those living in the Aeries, the privileged upper reaches of the city, against the banished mystics who dwell below in the Depths. But Aria doesn't remember falling in love with Thomas; in fact, she wakes one day with huge gaps in her memory. And she can't conceive why her parents would have agreed to unite with the Fosters in the first place. Only when Aria meets Hunter, a gorgeous rebel mystic from the Depths, does she start to have glimmers of recollection—and to understand that he holds the key to unlocking her past. The choices she makes can save or doom the city—including herself.

Wishlist Wednesday #20

Wishlist Wednesday is a weekly book blog hop hosted by Dani at Pen to Paper where we will post about a book that has been on our wishlist for some time, or just added, that we can't wait to get off the wishlist and onto our bookshelves.

This is a book which has got some great reviews, and has been described as "bizarre", but in a good way. I like the sound of that! This is the first in a 3 book series.

Angels, mystery, romance and humour in a dark world. My kinda book.

A Touch Mortal by Leah Clifford
Goodreads

Eden didn't expect Az.

Not his saunter down the beach toward her. Not his unbelievable pick up line. Not the instant, undeniable connection. And not his wings.

Yeah.

So long happily-ever-after.

Now trapped between life and death, cursed to spread chaos with her every touch, Eden could be the key in the eternal struggle between heaven and hell. All because she gave her heart to one of the Fallen, an angel cast out of heaven.

She may lose everything she ever had. She may be betrayed by those she loves most. But Eden will not be a pawn in anyone else's game. Her heart is her own.

And that's only the beginning of the end.

Looks good right? Has anybody read it already? What did you think?

Goals and updates- "Take Control of Your TBR pile" March

Here's the thing... Because I borrow so many library books, and get so many books to read for review, I always make reading these books a priority and I can never find time to read the books that I actually own. (Not that that stops me from lusting after and ordering even more!)
But I really do want to catch up on some of the books I have already have on my shelf. I bought them because I was so excited to read them after all. So this March I am joining in with Kimba at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer and around a hundred other book bloggers in pledging to spend March reading through the books I already have to read.
So- sorry library, and sorry publishers- but I'm hanging on to your books for a while longer and March is strictly a TBR month!

Right- on average I read about 10 books a month (2 of which are audio books so that doesn't count), but I have picked out a bunch of books that I aim to read this month.

I want to read at least 8 of this pile (+ 3 are spares in case I manage to read super quickly!)

It actually scared me when I was trying to narrow down which books to choose for this challenge, exactly how many books I have sitting unread- I may have to give myself another TBR only month later in the year!

I'm looking forward to working through these amazing looking books (finally!), and also- one of my favourite aspects of these readalong/ read-a-thon challenges- networking with other book bloggers.

I will update my progress here, and on twitter- Using hashtag #TakeControl

Blogger interview with Kailia from Reading the Best of the Best

As part of the awesome book blogger Love-a-thon hosted by Alexa and Katelyn, I have been asked to swap interviews with fellow book blogger Kailia, who blogs over at Reading the Best of the Best

I love Kailia's blog because it is fresh, unique, and intelligent. She posts a wide variety of excellent discussion topics as well as book reviews, and I highly recommend you go check it out.

Hi Kailia- would you like to tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog?
Hi all! My name is Kailia and I'm an 18 year old blogger at Reading the Best of the Best! I currently live in a small town in the south but I'm a city girl at heart! I started blogging because I loved books and I wanted to talk about them!

How long have you been blogging for?
Since 2009 which is SUPER crazy to think! I actually didn't get into blogging before two years ago! Before than, it was just kind of here!

What's been your best experience of blogging so far?
Meeting all sorts of people online and all of the books I've been introduced to because of blogging! I actually went to YallFest last November but had it not been for blogging, I would have NEVER heard about it!

Do you have any particularly great blogging pals, that you feel closer to than others? Which are your favourite book blogs?
I have blogging friends I talk to, mostly on Twitter. I love Keertana from Ivy Book Bindings and Ishita from The Reading Fish is fantastic! Katie of Katie's Book Blog is one of bloggers who has always been so sweet to me! I love all the blogs I mentioned but I also love reading The Perpetual Page Turner and Good Books and Good Wine

Roughly how many books do you read each month?
About 12 ish when I actually try. I'm still in high school and the last year has been full of tests and college prep which is SO time consuming!

Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks, hardbacks or audiobooks?
I have now tried to hear about 10 book on audiobook and have finished none so I personally don't like audiobooks. I LOVE a good paperback but hardbacks are nice too. If I have a series in all paperback then all of the books have to be in paperback and the same with hardbacks. I like ebooks because I have two e-readers so I can always store them on there! My shelves are very full!

Is there an author that you would really like to meet?
SO MANY! The one I know will never happen: J.K. Rowling. She's my idol. I'd also love to meet Kristin Cashore. Her books are some of my favorites!

Have you ever read a book that you would like to rewrite the ending of? Why?
The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray. Karthik turns into a tree. A TREE. I would change it so you know, HE DOES NOT TURN INTO A TREE.
(OMG- I completely agree with you about that- I hated that ending!)

Quickfire questions
What is your favourite-

Food? Pizza. I know. But I LOVE pizza!
Electronic gadget? my iPad!
TV show? As of right now, Doctor Who
Book? (Hahahaha!) Any of the Harry Potters. Or Graceling. Or Anna and the French Kiss.
Book crush? WHAT IS THIS?! Um. A lot of them? Po. Etienne. Peeta.

Extract and Giveaway from Michelle Davidson Argyle

Thanks to Michelle Davidson Argyle and Xpresso Book Tours I have an ebook copy of The Breakaway by Michelle Davidson Argyle to give away to one lucky reader. I love this series, as you can see from my reviews here-

My Review of The Breakaway here

THE BREAKAWAY - Rhemalda Publishing / May 1st, 2012
When Naomi Jensen is kidnapped, it takes her parents two days to realize she’s missing. Escape isn’t high on her list of priorities when all she has to return to is an abusive boyfriend and parents who never paid much attention to her. For the first time in her life she’s part of a family—even if it is a family of criminals. But she’s still a captive. In a desperate attempt to regain some control in her life, Naomi embarks on a dangerous plan to make one of her kidnappers think she’s falling in love with him. The plan works too well, and when faced with the chance to escape, Naomi isn’t sure she wants to take it.

My Review of Pieces (still to post)

PIECES - Rhemalda Publishing / February 14th, 2013
Two years after watching her kidnappers go to prison, Naomi Jensen is still in love with one of them. Jesse will be released in a few years, and Naomi knows college is the perfect distraction while she waits. But when her new friend Finn makes her question what is right and what is wrong, she begins to wonder if Jesse is the one for her … until she discovers he's out on parole. Naomi must sort through her confusion to figure out where love and freedom truly lie—in Finn, who has no connections to her past, or Jesse, who has just asked her to run away with him.

Pieces is a companion to The Breakaway and can be read independently, if desired.

I really enjoyed this series which I found to be clever, emotionally wrenching, confusing, and heartbreaking. If you like contemporary stories I highly recommend you give this series a read.

To help you get to read this series, I have an ebook copy of The Breakaway (the first book in the series) to give away to one lucky reader.

Simply enter your details on the form below and one winner will be selected at random on Monday 25th February.

Still need a little convincing? Here is an extract from Pieces- book 2, which is the extract I read that prompted me to want to read this series last year. Enjoy!

Pieces Excerpt
From Chapter 6
She almost didn’t recognize him behind the wheel of his father’s green pickup truck. His hair was longer than she remembered. For a moment, her mind spun. She dropped the box in her hands and it fell to the floor, spilling the pink and white candies everywhere. He was parking almost directly across the street from her now. As stupid as it was, she hadn’t planned this far. Now he was getting out of the truck.
She had long since rolled up her window and turned on the air conditioning, so it wasn’t as if she could yell to him. Instead, she opened her door as fast as she could and tripped over her feet as she stumbled out onto the road. She shut the door and the sound made Jesse stop and look up before he could shut the truck’s door. His mouth dropped open.
“Naomi?”
“I heard you were on parole.” She brushed a sweaty hand across her forehead. “I … I—”
“I’m not allowed to see you,” he interrupted, taking a step back. But he had nowhere to go except the truck. His hand lingered on the open door. “I’ll be sent back to prison if I attempt to contact or see you. I’m not even sure I can see you after my parole is over. It might be long time.” He looked at his hands. “I have a hearing next week. I’ll find out more then.”
Even from across the street, Naomi could see the muscles in his jaw tightening with anger. She knew it wasn’t aimed at her. “But you aren’t attempting,” she said. “I’ve taken that initiative, so it’s not your fault.”
“Yes, but if my parole officer finds out about this, he won’t be happy. I was lucky enough to be released to my father. If you’re found here, I’ll be in more trouble than you can imagine.” His face was stiff, his body tense. Naomi realized what a mistake she had made, but there he was, right in front of her. It was too much. She took a step forward, relieved the road was quiet with no traffic at the moment. Jesse glanced down the street, then back to her. His expression softened as she walked toward him. Each of her steps were heavy, as if she didn’t believe she would ever reach him.

Wishlist Wednesday #19

Wishlist Wednesday is a weekly book blog hop hosted by Dani at Pen to Paper where we will post about a book that has been on our wishlist for some time, or just added, that we can't wait to get off the wishlist and onto our bookshelves.

I like the sound of this book for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I love new retellings of old stories, and this is based on The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Also, I love how mysterious and it sounds- creepy but with a smidge of romance. I'm intrigued!

Jekel Loves Hyde by Beth Fantaskey
Goodreads

Jill Jekel has always obeyed her parents rules; especially the one about never opening the mysterious, old box in her father's office. But when her dad is murdered, and her college savings disappear, she's tempted to peek inside, as the contents might be the key to a lucrative chemistry scholarship.

To improve her odds, Jill enlists the help of gorgeous, brooding Tristen Hyde, who has his own dark secrets locked away. As the team of Jekel and Hyde, they recreate experiments based on the classic novel, hoping not only to win a prize, but to save Tristen's sanity. Maybe his life. But Jill's accidental taste of a formula unleashes her darkest nature and compels her to risk everything, even Tristen's love just for the thrill of being . . . bad.

What do you think? Has anybody read it already? What did you think of it?

Review: The Breakaway by Michelle Davidson Argyle

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Source: Review copy from author via Xpresso Book Tours

Synopsis from Goodreads:
When Naomi Jensen is kidnapped, it takes her parents two days to realize she’s missing. Escape isn’t high on her list of priorities when all she has to return to is an abusive boyfriend and parents who never paid much attention to her. For the first time in her life she’s part of a family—even if it is a family of criminals. But she’s still a captive. The plan works too well, and when faced with the chance to escape, Naomi isn’t sure she wants to take it.

The Breakaway is a unique and heartbreaking contemporary novel, about a 17 year old girl who is kidnapped and held hostage. I thought this book was incredibly well-written- chilling, moving, confusing and thought- provoking.

Naomi is a very timid and insecure girl- she is too scared to really stand up for herself. In some ways Naomi has always been a victim- ignored by her parents, and put down by her aggressive boyfriend, and so she has never fought back. But I did find that she was still a character that you could connect with emotionally, and I did feel sympathy for her and fear for her situation.

It is almost a new spin on a Stockholm Syndrome story as Naomi starts to accept her situation, grow attached to her kidnappers and even to fall in love with one of them. It is the family she never had. I did actually grow to really like Jesse, despite the situation, and found it ironic that compared to her boyfriend Brad, the nice guy is the villain.

I loved the tension and the very real sense of danger that Naomi is in, and also Naomi's insecurity and indecisiveness- what is right and wrong- and the ultimate wrench of her choices. It is very intense and I found the story completely engrossing. This is not your normal kidnapping situation, and Naomi has her eyes opened to how people can relate to one another.

There is also the mystery surrounding the kidnappers- the reason for Naomi's abduction, and the gradual unveiling of a backstory that really helped to flesh out these characters, and show them in different lights. They do have a reason behind their actions. They do play psychological mind games, but they also obviously grow to care about Naomi as well.

It is a frightening, fascinating and moving story. Clever in a very twisted way. I really enjoyed getting into the mindset of the struggles of the main character and feeling confused and passionate about these characters. Recommended for fans of darker, realistic fiction.

If this book has you intrigued I will be hosting a giveaway for a chance to win a copy on Thursday (21st Feb)!

Review: This is not a Test by Courtney Summers

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Source: Library

Synopsis from Goodreads:
It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self. To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually wantto live. But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside. When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?

All I knew going into this book was that it was about a group of teenagers barricading themselves into a high school during a zombie apocalypse. What I wasn't prepared for was how cleverly psychologically deep it is. It is extremely moving and brought me to tears!

This is not a Test is terrifying and raw. It is so tense throughout, and, for a book where there is not a lot of action it is so gripping, just because of the constant tension and desperation. It is a book about surviving, and what people have to hold on to when the world falls apart.

Sloane is definitely not your average heroine. She is very brave but also very detached and cold, but I loved her distinct voice. Sloane is so damaged and broken at the start of the novel that she is considering ending it all. Dealing with an abusive father and mourning the desertion of her sister- her rock- she feels dead already.
“She always said I'd die without her and she left anyway."
"But you didn't." he says.
"I did," I say. "I'm just waiting for the rest of me to catch up.”

And that's when the zombie apocalypse strikes. The zombies are almost a sideline story to the battle Sloane is waging against herself.

As she and a small band of young survivors struggle to cope alone, barricaded into their high school, arguing about what to do, and how to protect themselves from the dead pounding on the doors, Sloane's priorities change, and it only becomes important to her that she ends her life doing something noble and sacrificing herself for new friends.

It's so fantastically written I could quote a load of sentences from the book that really stunned me. This is a harsh and dark story- and this book will play mind games with you! I really enjoyed the twists and turns, not knowing who to trust, the complicated love/hate relationships between the characters, and especially just how emotionally wringing it is.

Wishlist Wednesday #18

Wishlist Wednesday is a weekly book blog hop hosted by Dani at Pen to Paper where we will post about a book that has been on our wishlist for some time, or just added, that we can't wait to get off the wishlist and onto our bookshelves.

I think cover lust is a large part of the reason why I want this book. Isn't it pretty? Plus it sounds weird and emotional- and I'm curious.

Above by Leah Bobet

Matthew has loved Ariel from the moment he found her in the tunnels, her bee’s wings falling away. They live in Safe, an underground refuge for those fleeing the city Above—like Whisper, who speaks to ghosts, and Jack Flash, who can shoot lightning from his fingers.

But one terrifying night, an old enemy invades Safe with an army of shadows, and only Matthew, Ariel, and a few friends escape Above. Review: Quicksilver by R.J Anderson

My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

Source: Publisher via Netgalley

Synopsis from Goodreads:
Back home Tori was the girl who had everything a sixteen-year-old could want—popularity, money, beauty. Everything. Including a secret. That secret made her very valuable.

Now she's left everything from her old life behind, including her real name and Alison, the only person who truly understood her. She can't lose the secret. But if she wants to have anything resembling a normal life, she has to blend in and hide her unique…talents.

Plans change when the enigmatic Sebastian Faraday reappears in Tori's life and delivers bad news: she hasn't escaped. In fact, she's attracted new interest in the form of an obsessed ex-detective now in the employ of a genetics lab.

She has only one shot at ditching her past for good and living like the normal human she wishes she could be. Tori must use every ounce of her considerable hacking and engineering skills—and even then, she might need to sacrifice more than she could possibly imagine if she wants to be free.

The riveting companion to R.J. Anderson's acclaimed Ultraviolet

I had forgotten how much I loved Ultraviolet- the first book in this series, but it all started coming back to me once I started reading Quicksilver. This book is emotional, tense and mysterious and I was gripped all the way through. I so easily got lost in this world, and was right there with these incredible characters.

This companion novel focuses on Tori- a relatively minor character in Ultraviolet, and it's funny that when told from her perspective she is so much more likable! Her experiences have definitely changed her for the better. I didn't like her much at all in Ultraviolet, as she came across as the popular, bitchy high-school cheerleader type.

But all that is stripped away in this book, as she makes a fresh start in a new school away from her old life completely. Tori is a fantastic mix of strong and flawed, and I loved cheering her on. Her passion for engineering and creating things is admirable and she has a determination to leave her past behind, and make a completely fresh start. Tori is a very resourceful, smart, and interesting, crazily unique character and I loved rooting for her.

Quicksilver starts off a few months after the events of Ultraviolet. Although this is listed as a companion novel and not as a sequel, I would recommend reading Ultraviolet first, as Quicksilver dives straight in and references the events of Ultraviolet without much explanation. I think I would've been lost without knowing the background of the past events and the history between the characters.

The story could have easily ended with Ultraviolet as everything was wrapped up, and seemed to be starting a new phase, but I really loved catching up with Alison and Sebastian again, and seeing exactly 'what happened next' for each of them.
There are also new characters introduced- like Milo, who quickly becomes one of Tori's best friends and someone that she feels she can confide in. He is very sweet and I smile whenever I think of him, but he is a very interesting contrast to Sebastian.

This book is very intense, very clever, and bursting with tension and suspense. The tone of this book is slightly different from this book to Ultraviolet but only because of the change in perspective from Alison's experiences in a mental hospital to Tori's snarky world view in her new town. Both books are slightly different but highly enjoyable.

I also love that nothing is ever predictable in these books. There are plenty of unexpected twists and the author doesn't shy away from presenting tragedy and heartbreak, so there is never any guarantee that there will be a happy ending. Tori lives in constant fear of being discovered and that tension rolls off the pages.

This is a boldly different YA series, with such great characters. A sci-fi novel with a streak of realism through it. I raced through it, and I think it's fantastic.
